This feels like another example of control limiting participation. The more controls are placed on input, the less likely people will become willing participants. Anonymous editors providing unimpeded content was the key to the explosive growth of Wikipedia. By attempting to control the input, the Wikipedia leadership has dealt themselves their own deathblow. It appears, to me, that Wikipedia has lost its credibility and will likely never regain it. Is there tag line, "the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit" still true?
The decay of time, bitter infighting, and the increasing scope and strength of regulations slowly strangle the life out of Wikipedia, with editors—its braintrust—fleeing in droves, even as traffic at the world's fifth most-popular website keeps growing. [WSJ]
